___________
Today I bought a little jar of Vitamin D3. I decided to buy it in the organic section of the supermarket. I got all my yearly blood work done, and for my surprise, my vitamin D was less than what I should normally have. Everything else was fine, only my hormones was a little off too, but that's because I suffer from Polycystic ovary disease.
So once I found out about my Vitamin D deficiency I decided to do some research and I want to share with you guys because my doctor said that almost half of the population is getting low on vitamin D. So let's try to get the word out :) Of course I am not a professional nor a nutritionist. Always talk to your doctor and please get your bloodwork done :) Is only once a year and can prevent you from so much!
I refuse to go into the sun, I hate sun! I hate heat. I have my own personal paranoia and fears of it. I never go to the beach or wear short sleeves. Since I do not get around 10 minutes of sun everyday, it contributes for my Vitamin D to be low. Also, I do not drink milk, always hated it! I already tried almond milk, soy milk, regular milk, goat milk... hate them all! I eat cheese, but not on a regular basis, and when I do is always the lowest calorie one.
I'm fat. Surprising? Not at all! Overweight people have more tendency of lacking Vitamin D. Vitamin D is extracted from the blood by fat cells, altering its release into the circulation. Not cool huh?
I do eat a lot of fish, but I think is not enough to produce the right amount of Vitamin that I need. Also, for some reason I stopped eating yogurt. I used to eat it everyday. So I got myself some yogurt and a case of "Danactive" in the supermarket.
What are the health benefits of Vitamin D?
Vitamin D and Calcium are like "cousins" since I started doing my research . This awesome vitamin will help your bones, blood pressure, regulates insulin, boost your immune system, and a lot of diseases; such as Alzheimer's. Of course it won't prevent you 100% from developing Alzheimer, Diabetes, Cancer or Osteoporosis, but it will help along with other vitamins, and a healthy life. Some symptons of the low Vitamin D in your system can be..
- Constipation
- Mood changes during PMS ( I know most of us get that, but once is not a normal mood swing it should concern you *Grab a chair and throws at my boyfriend* lol )
- Depression
- Difficulty breathing
- Some of the bad symptoms like the next ones can only be detected after it is too late such as colon cancer, breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatism.
Ready to get some Vitamin D going on you, babe? ;)
10 minutes a day of sun exposure should be almost enough for your body to produce this wonderful vitamin. However, if you live in a cold place, like me, or do not like to eat certain foods, here are some options:
- Buy a supplement from the pharmacy/supermarket. They should cost you at maximum $20 for 3 months supply!
- Eat your dairy; butter, milk, margarine, yogurt
- Fish, oysters, shrimp - yummmmy!
- Soy milk
- Some especial cereals are high in vitamin D as well!
I really hope you guys enjoy this health post.
xoxo ♥
thanks for the info, I know I need more vitamin D too. I will make sure to drink more soy milk and eat more fortified cereals:) Have you tried rice milk? I'd say its the more neutral of the alternative milks. Almond milk is always very good. Some orange juices also contain Vitamin D, so does quaker oatmeal.
